When to Go

Portugal is a year-round destination with plenty to see and do in every season, but deciding when to travel can sometimes be difficult. Here's some helpful information to assist you.

The most popular time to visit Portugal is during the summer months of July and August. Beaches and tourist attractions are busiest during these months. It’s also the warmest time of year, though breezes from the Atlantic help keep coastal areas a bit cooler.

Portugal’s low season for travel lasts from November through March, with typically fewer crowds and lower prices. The weather still tends to be mild and sunny in the south, whereas northern regions see plenty of rain and even snow at higher elevations. In December, you’ll find lively Christmas markets in several towns and cities. Carnaval is celebrated in February, and the most notable festivities take place in Lisbon and the Algarve region.

April through June and September through October are generally considered the best times to travel value-wise, striking a balance between off-peak crowds and pleasant weather. Springtime is warm and sunny, with almond trees in bloom and wildflowers dotting the countryside. Many festivals take place in June, including St. Anthony’s Day. Autumn brings changing leaves in the north, and southern vineyards are busy with grape harvesting.
